The element of trust is the most significant challenge facing any organization. The circle of trust dwindles in command and control systems where it’s “My way of the highway” and “This is the way we have always done things around here.” When managers and leaders foster a command and control style of governing if you will, they unwittingly reflect cavernous layers of mistrust in the abilities and commitment of their subordinates.

They impose rules and laws not as a part of government compliance but they choose to overemphasize these sanctions has a method of subjugation. You’ve seen this. Such organizations are filled with hurried employees who reflect their managers mistrust in them by their hesitancy to behave empowered and especially, trust their personal abilities.

Real, effective leadership can be found in the adaptability of an organization, innovation from every level, low attrition and customer service advanced by customers themselves only in a high trust culture where fear is replaced by courage.

Think bolder about trust in these three ways:

  1. Reduce fear
  2. Experiment more often and more cheaply
  3. Expand the scope of employee autonomy

In the above organization, people trust each other enough to share information, diverse opinions are shared without infamy, and risk taking are applauded.

Every true leader celebrates those who fail forward. Who learn from their mistakes. Who champion others. Who incrementally get better and better. Because fear paralyzes us and similar to a relationship, mistrust demoralizes.

You’ve got this. Jim
